About the Drought Leadership Training
The Drought Leadership Training is a hybrid program that combines virtual and in-person training opportunities on drought mitigation and management for retail agriculture, agricultural services, extension, or with agriculture-focused agencies/organizations.
It is an estimated 16 hour training developed by the Drought Advisors team, made up of CSU extension, researchers, farmers, ranchers, and agricultural professionals from around the region.
Core Competencies
- Ability to access and integrate forecasts into drought decision-making
- Awareness of tax issues and implications of drought
- Ability to evaluate the costs and potential benefits of implementing a specific change to increase drought resilience
- Awareness of the programs available through the FSA for drought relief
- Knowledge of different drought mitigation strategies for livestock and range
- Knowledge of maximizing the efficiency of irrigation water for crops during drought
- Knowledge of strategies to conserve soil moisture in a cropping system
- Ability to prioritize crops/ fields with limited irrigation water
- Ability to make a drought plan
- Ability to recognize and respond to stress in drought
